Bagworms are common pests in North Texas, particularly affecting evergreen trees such as cedars, junipers, and cypress. They can also infest broadleaf trees like oaks, maples, and elms. These insects are known for their distinctive silk bags, which they create using plant material from their host trees.

Fall Armyworm

 Fall armyworms, scientifically known as Spodoptera frugiperda, are common pests in North Texas, particularly during late summer and early fall. They are notorious for causing significant damage to lawns and crops, including bermudagrass, ryegrass, and various agricultural plants.

Crape Myrtle Bark Scale

 Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects belonging to the family Aphididae. Commonly found in Crape Myrtles, they vary in color, most about 1/8 inch long and have pear-shaped bodies. Aphids feed on plant sap, which can lead to various symptoms like twisted or curled leaves, yellowing and stunted growth, even sooty mold growth from honeydew excreted by the aphids.

 Crape myrtle bark scale appears as white or gray waxy growths on the stems, twigs, and trunks of crape myrtles, often accompanied by black sooty mold. These pests can significantly affect the appearance and health of the trees. As the scales feed on the sap, the crape myrtle may appear less vibrant, with leaves showing signs of discoloration or wilting.

Emerald Ash Borers

The emerald ash borer is an invasive beetle from Asia that attacks and kills ash trees by feeding on the tissues under the bark. It has caused significant damage to ash tree populations.  Symptoms to look for in trees include dead branches near the top of the tree, leafy shoots sprouting from the trunk, bark splits exposing S-shaped larva tunnels and D-shaped exit holes. Recently found in Rockwall County in July of 2025.


Grubs

Grubs are the larval stage of beetles, particularly the June beetle and southern masked chafer, which are common in North Texas. These pests can cause significant damage to lawns by feeding on grass roots. Some signs of Grub infestation are "Brown Patches", look for irregularly shaped brown areas in the lawn. Grass that may detach easily from the soil due to root damage. Digging up sections of turf can reveal grubs, which are small, white, and C-shaped.
